What not to do in Phuket?

In Thailand, as in any other country in the world, there are rules and customs that are best not to break. Here are some tips and recommendations that will help you avoid getting into an awkward situation in Phuket.
  • Do not offend the religious feelings of believers. When going to a temple, dress modestly and choose clothes that cover your shoulders and knees.

  • Do not enter temples in shoes.

  • Do not cross your legs in the presence of Buddhist monks.

  • Do not point at people and objects with your fingers or… your foot.

  • Do not touch the head of natives, even children.

  • Do not hug natives as a sign of sympathy. Thank them verbally.

  • Do not copy the specific gesture of natives - “wai” (folding hands). The fact is that there are quite a few variations of this gesture. And you can easily get into an awkward situation.

  • Are you sure you know how to show “wai” correctly? Take your time, foreigners should not bow first.

  • Do not use a pen with red ink to write names. The names of the dead are written in red.

  • Don’t leave your chopsticks in your plate after eating. It’s a bad omen.

  • Don’t refuse a treat from a local you know. You’ll make them very upset.

  • Don’t sunbathe topless or without clothes.
